Onion salsa

A friend of mine was kind enough to make me some really amazing Mexican food and bring it over to the studio for a shoot. One of the items was a brilliantly colorful onion salsa with yellow peppers, fresh cracked black peppercorns and red onions. The beautiful colors were set off perfectly by a simple white bowl and freshly made tortilla chips.

Roses

I was meandering through some store and they had these stunning white roses. I don’t think even the magic stylists who work for the floral companies could have prepared something so lovely.

Or perhaps I am just biased since they were a spontaneous discovery.

Either way – they are gorgeous.

Ouray, Colorado

What’s a girl to do when she gets a new tilt-shift lens and heads on a road trip? Why, she stops all along the way to play with her new goodie.

Ouray, CO is known as “America’s Switzerland” – now who deemed it such I am not sure, but it IS a picturesque little town nestled in the middle of the San Juan mountains and is not only a tourist spot with some healing hot springs located there, but, as my dad says “Gives the tourists somewhere to get a drink after driving over Red Mountain Pass for the first time.” Highlights are a fire hose fight in the middle of town on the 4th of July every year.

The magic of Gloria’s

There is this little Salvadoran restaurant in LA that was within walking distance of where I used to live. Unfortunately, I did not discover this gem until I had been there a few years. Fortunately, some friends of mine chose it to get together one night and from then on, I was hooked.

Gloria’s has been around for years. Still small, still family owned and still packed almost any time you stop in. It had the honor of being chosen for Guy Fieri’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives which was great in that it meant Gloria’s was shown to oodles of new people, but it made getting a table even more difficult at times.

I decided I wanted to shoot some of their food items and so ordered a ton of them and tossed ‘em on the set. Added bonus was the pupusas made for a lovely lunch later.

If you stop in, check out the Carne Adobada, the pupusas and the insanely good tortilla soup.

Soleil Westwood

A few years ago, I was volunteering with the cycling team for Team in Training to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. One of the participants for the Tucson ride was a man named Luc who happened to be chef/owner of a little French bistro called Soleil Westwood.

It only took one visit for me to be hooked. I had the honor of shooting some images for his menu and an additional honor of him naming a variety of poutine after me – the Poutine Sheridan.

If you are in LA and have the chance, get to Soleil Westwood, you will not be disappointed. Be sure to order the poutine – a decadent French Canadian specialty of French fries covered with gravy and cheese curds.

The Sacred Valley

Heading from Cusco to the Sacred Valley, our tour stopped at this overlook for the view and also to take a moment to help the local economy by buying trinkets from the people waiting there. After buying a few little odds and ends, I looked behind me, away from the view of the valley and I saw this child sitting on what looked like the last ruins of some sort of structure. Dressed in traditional Andean garb, he waited for his mother to finish dealing with the tourists.

Beautiful berries

I was at the studio one night wondering what to shoot. I found some lovely berries that I thought would be great in a pie or trifle or something and then it hit me that they were quite beautiful all on their own.

Viktor Benês bakery in Marina del Rey was a dream come true for spontaneous shoots. Behind those glass walled cases were some of the most beautifully decorated baked goods you might find anywhere. From cookies with funny faces to elaborate cakes and pastries, this is a wonderful place to just go ogle. I also love they are tolerant of my pickiness when selecting the items I want to shoot that day – and for their care in packaging them up for me.
